The Community Provider Association's series of virtual town hall meetings is off to a great start! Below is a recap of our first two meetings with members of Louisiana's federal delegation, as well as a preview of our next town hall.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to present challenges for the disability services system across the state and country, CPA is continuing its advocacy for our member organizations. One of our recent advocacy efforts is a series of virtual town halls that enable our members to engage with the Louisiana Congressional delegation.
virtual town Hall Meetings Recap
Congressman Garret Graves (LA-06)
On July 8, Congressman Garret Graves (LA-06) jumped on an hour-long Zoom with CPA members to learn about their work keeping individuals with disabilities safe during the pandemic. CPA members located in the 6th District, including Lafourche Arc, Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge, Evergreen Life Services, and CARE, Inc., shared the challenges they are facing due to program closures, staffing shortages, and increased expenses.
Congressman Clay Higgins (LA-03)
On July 1, CPA members had the chance to talk to Kelsey Wolfgram, Senior Legislative Assistant for Congressman Clay Higgins (LA-03). Kelsey heard from CPA members located in the Congressman's district, including Evergreen Life Services, Arc of Acadiana, Cadence of Acadiana, and Leading Health Care, all of whom outlined the same challenges of increased expenses, decreased revenues, and workforce issues.
Both Congressman Graves and Kelsey asked for recommendations on how Congress can help mitigate these issues. We stressed that organizations need another round of federal funding that is specifically earmarked for disability services, which is a provision under consideration for the next federal relief bill. Congressman Graves and Kelsey were very receptive to our challenges and recommendations and promised to keep them in mind as Congress works on these issues.
We are looking forward to our next virtual town hall with Senator Bill Cassidy on Tuesday, July 21 at 2:00 pm.
